I am really interested in recording time, probably because I worked on trying to capture climate change over long periods got me interested in how people perceive time and how cycles of events are felt and understood. This is my first foray into thinking about time and where best to start than to look at the Sun.
'View the Day' is an ongoing project to record the sky over a period of one year. Using a camera controlled by a computer server I take a picture of the sky every quarter hour and save it. I then use image analysis techniques to average the colour of the image to one colour. I am experimenting displaying the images in various ways and if you click here you can view the web preview with some supporting text.
Also take a look at London.pdf, it shows the predicted sunrise and sunset times for 2008 (It won't change much for other years). If you compare the curve you will notice that it is really similar to 'View the Day' which I guess it really should. I made the PDF with Java and some crazy equations that can work out the Sun's position (azimuth etc) at any time relative to any place around the world. To have a look at the equation click here.
A major project I am working on is using weather data captured from Yahoo and other sources to make printed drawings. To view some drawings and find out more about the techniques and tools I am using click here.
I have been experimenting with RGB LED's to get some colour in my work. I am using a tiRGB controller which I can talk to via serial from a computer or phone. To take a look click here.
Printing 3D objects is a crazy concept and playing with a starch printer rapid prototyping machine I feel you are taking a sneaky pic at the future. I have been doing some experiments with a machine and am especially interested in trying to replicate natural forms, shapes and actions in 3D. To see more click here.
